This is my first venture into abstract/nonrepresentational painting. I always thought it would be so difficult, because I was thinking too hard about it.

These were created off to the side of a still life painting I was working on, using the extras and leftovers from my palette.

I was just “playing around,” but now I see that in playing, I found a way to break through the realist in me, and explore different techniques through the process of putting color down, “paving over” with my palette knife, scraping through, and repeating the process.

They reflect my thoughts of humanity: gaining control over nature, abandoning it, then tearing it down and starting over.
At least, that’s what I was thinking about at the time.

I’m excited to try these techniques on future paintings.
